Learn to Sail

Basic Keelboat

Two Days

Objective: To responsibly skipper and crew a simple day-sailing keelboat in familiar waters with light to moderate wind and sea conditions.

Classes are taught aboard monohull sloops with tiller steering. This two day, non-live-aboard, course gives you a solid foundation for more advanced classes – and for the best weekends for the rest of your life.
You will learn and do things like: gybe, come about, helms a lee, etc., during this two day – all on the boat – hands on experience. Learn man overboard practices and how to safely retrieve a person, take the tiller and feel the power and romance that sailing is made of. Docking and points of sail will fall in place by the end of this FUN two day experience.

Basic Cruising

Two Days

Objective: To responsibly skipper and crew an auxiliary powered cruising sailboat during daylight hours within sight of land in moderate wind and sea conditions.

This course stresses the “hands on” experience needed to safely handle the larger Auxiliaries being sailed or chartered all over the world. Now you can build upon the skills gained in Basic Keelboats as you become familiar with cruising boats which have more comfortable accommodations and more complex systems. You will advance your skill level in sail trim, reefing, crew coordination, boat systems, chart reading, anchoring, rules of the road and more. Passing this gradeable two day course enables you to bare-boat charter up to 30′ auxiliaries with Harbor North.
Basic Cruising is one of our most sought after courses.

Bare Boat Cruising

Three Days

Objective: To responsibly skipper, crew or bare-boat charter an inboard auxiliary powered cruising sailboat within sight of land to a port or an anchorage during daylight hours in moderate to strong wind and sea conditions.

This is our most prestigious course. Successful completion of this course enables you to be your own Captain and Charter with Harbor North’s large Bare Boat fleet from 30′ to 42′. On the first day of this “live aboard” cruise you travel to the Lake Erie Islands, “The Virgins of the Midwest.” Your major hands on lesson includes; advance sail trim, weather forecasting, advance navigation (with and without electronic instruments), anchoring, foul weather sailing. Twenty four hours a day, hands on experience to fulfill your yachting needs.

Women’s Sailing Weekend

This two day live aboard clinic focuses on the “hands on” operation of the mid-size cruising auxiliary sailboat. This is a great opportunity to hone your cruising skills in a friendly environment. The weekend will start with a Friday night “Meet the Crew” get together. Saturday will see three on the water sessions with a strong emphasis on boat handling under sail and power, along with practice drills in tacking, gybing, and coming about. Sunday will see more on the water sessions with reefing, furling, and dockline handling rounding out a very relaxing weekend.

Crews will be split by ability level and space is limited. Cost for the weekend is only $345, which includes Friday night’s party, Saturday night’s dinner, all meals, two nights aboard and two days of instruction on the boats.
